Director: Neill Blomkamp
Writer: Neill Blomkamp
Who didn’t love District 9? Being an avid sci fi fan some of my all time favorite films belong to this genre ie, Tarkovsky’s Solaris, Kubricks 2001, Shane Carruth’s Primer and to a lesser extent Moon. I’m a sucker for the genre and watch almost all of the sci fi films out there! I just loved district nine, Blomkamp‘s inspiration derived from apartheid made for an engaging and exciting film.
So I sauntered into the Tardis and flashed forward four years to Elysium, hmmmmm what can I say about this? Damon offered an all around poor performance as Max, Jodie fosters version of Delacourt lacked the coldness that the character required. William Fichtner and Sharlto Copley committed to their roles at least and stood out in a sea of hot mess.
The film definitely had promise, a better than average story line was there but wasn’t really brought to life due to what I could only guess was hideous and thoughtless direction and a lack of commitment by Damon and Jodie.
It’s always sad to see a sci fi fail to reach it’s potential and unfortunately this one is relegated to the unwatchable pile. hot mess out of 10.
